Sciatica is a common complaint that we have people coming to our office to have treated. Now, Sciatica is actually just the symptom, and what it describes as symptoms traveling down the back of your leg through the distribution of the sciatic nerve. So, in terms of how we treat that, well, it depends. It depends on the assessment. So, what are some of the things that we use here when we’re assessing something like leg symptoms like sciatica?

Jordan Meyer  0:31

Yeah. So, we’ll press around the areas that the nerve pierces through. So it might be we’re pressing on your hip, maybe press on the back of your leg, or your calf. We’re seeing if those muscles are sensitive. We might do what’s called orthopedic tests, where we’re moving your joints through certain stretching type of procedures to see if that elicits a painful response, something that you’re already feeling. We also will do what’s called joint palpations, we’re actually pressing to see does the joints in your lower back, for example, do they move efficiently. All those type of assessments, we try to blend together and help us form a, I guess, decision do they have Sciatica or not.

Right. And we’ll use a number of different techniques. If you look at any of the other videos on our page, you’ll see videos about the McKenzie method. So we’ll use the McKenzie method to determine where this issue is coming from because when we’re talking about sciatica, or the symptom of sciatica-type symptoms, it could be something that’s stemming from the back, it could be coming from specific musculature, and pending it on that nerve. So we hear often piriformis syndrome, so sometimes that can be the issue. It could be a neurodynamic issue, maybe that nerve’s not sliding and gliding. So, we don’t really know until we go through a adequate exam. So, in terms of the treatment, well, that all depends on what we find on our exam, but what are some of the things that we may use to treat sciatica?

Jordan Meyer  1:49

So a lot of it, again, maybe goes back to doing the therapy of McKenzie, and McKenzie is a really useful therapy that’s kind of been like the gold standard that we’ve seen to treat sciatica. We additionally will often use chiropractic manipulation adjusting your lower back as another useful tool amongst other treatments. It might be working on the muscle tissue itself through certain techniques. So, again, it just depends on how they present, what you’re showing up with. We will use the right tool for the job, that’s what we like to say. And remember too, sciatica can present very differently. You can have weakness in your leg without pain, you can have pain in your leg, you can just have a little bit of tingling in your leg. There’s a lot of different things that show up that could be sciatica, so there’s different forms of it. But, again, that’s where a good assessment by us helps distinguish do you have sciatica.
